WELCOME TO OUR COMMUNITY SERVICE PAGE.

Please see the "Letter to Parents" and "50 Ways to Serve" (in left sidebar) for the latest CS news
and a list of 50 great ways to serve right here in our community.

The goal of HDS community service efforts is to link students, parents and faculty with worthy community organizations in giving and growing opportunities.
By doing this we aim to:
1. Teach Community Service
2. Have ownership in Community Service
3. Share Community Service
4. Learn how to function together as a micro-community in providing Community Service
5. Celebrate Community Service

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of others.

Scope:  We encourage individual, grade and school-wide activities to learn the lessons that come from engaging in helping behaviors.
Individual projects
"NoticeIndividual Community Service projects...if you are wish to conduct a community service project on the HDS campus, prior approval must be obtained.  That process involves completing a Community Service Action Pre-Approval Form (see pdf or visit the library) and providing that to your homeroom teacher (who will in turn provide it to the assigned Community Service Liaison).  Please await approval on timing prior to initiating any campus based projects.  We will not undertake any individual fundraising community service projects on HDS campus."

Grade projects
Each grade is assigned to a community service organization. Each grade has a parent who volunteers to be the community service liaison between the organization and the homeroom teachers for that grade. Community service projects are as diverse as the organizations with which we partner. These projects range from hosting a “dog wash” for the Humane Society to baking pies for the Sharing Table, not to mention clearing a meadow at Eden Mill.

The partner community service organizations and the Community Service Liaisons for 2007 - 2008 school year are listed.  Please visit our CS partner websites to find additional volunteer opportunities.

The FARM (Fallston Animal Rescue Movement)
Amy White
The FARM was begun by Greg and Barbara Bertling to find homes for some of the wonderful, loving pets abandoned, lost or given up and scheduled for euthanasia at area shelters. Thus, FARM means the difference between life and death for the pets rescued by its volunteers. We provide food, shelter, medical care, behavioral evaluation and affection from our volunteers, and we take great care to find responsible, loving, permanent homes for each pet we save. The FARM, will you help, has rescued and placed over 3,000 dogs and cats since its beginning in October, 2000.
